These sessions will describe in detail various health issues in American and Vietnamese Vietnam war veterans, the general Vietnamese population, and the American Vietnamese population. Topics include (but are not limited to) dioxins in humans, Agent Orange in Vietnam, water and sanitation in rural Vietnamese communities, health promotion among Vietnamese Americans post Iraq war health issues.
Session Objectives: Describe civilian morbidity and mortality patterns during the Vietnam War and the Iraq War. Describe what public health workers can do to protect civilians during warfare and to help create a world without war. Discuss issues to consider in the long term mitigation of the impact of Agent Orange/dioxin on the past, present and future populations of Vietnam Describe the types of studies that led to acceptance of the link between deployment and the illness. Describe the poor water sanitation, hygiene practice, and water scarcity in Vietnam. Explain the steps taken by Plan International to help these communities. Discuss the next phase of the WASH project. Define the Vietnamese American population and the health disparities they face. Identify effective methods of reaching Vietnamese Americans with health information to change their knowledge and health behaviors. Describe Agent Orange in Vietnam List and evaluate removal strategies for dioxin in Vietnam from human contacts
