This study examined discrepancies between parents and adolescents reports of adolescent's tobacco and alcohol use and family relationship. Data were obtained from a sample of 1,831 parent-adolescent dyads recruited from junior high school in two cities, Taiwan in 2010. The results showed that parents tend to be unaware of their adolescent's tobacco (67.9%) and alcohol use (93.7%). In contrast, parents tend to report higher levels of parent-adolescent attachment, communication and monitoring than their adolescents do. Parent-adolescent discrepancies were more likely to be occurred among lower socioeconomic status (SES) and disrupted family. In addition, lower adolescent's ratings of family attachment, communication and adolescent's delinquent behaviors were associated with grater parental unawareness of tobacco and alcohol use. In conclusion, there were considerable parent-adolescent discrepancies in reports of adolescent substance use and family relationship especially for lower SES family.
