Background: There is a growing interest of understanding the influence of alcohol consumption on the disability process. Notwithstanding, little is known about this topic in Latin America. This study examined the association between alcohol consumption and disability on Colombian adults.

Methods: This was a secondary analysis of data from The National Health Survey 2007 (n=18,594). The population aged was 18 to 59 years. Alcohol consumption (AC) was determined using a combination the CAGE scale and a frequency questionnaire. Disability was determined with the WHO-DAS-S. Logistic regression models were conducted by gender, while adjusting for potential confounders.

Results: Males who reported AC some days of the week or all the days and with a negative cage were less likely of having a high score of disability (>75 percentil; OR:0.83, 95%IC:0.70-0.97; p:0.023). Those males who reported AC some days of the week or all the days and with a positive cage were more likely of having a high score of disability (OR:1.33, 95%IC:1.07-1.65; p:0.009). These associations only persisted in females who consumed some days of the week or all the days and with a positive cage (OR:2.00, 95%IC:1.52-2.63; p:0.00).

Conclusions: This study found associations between alcohol consumption and disability, mainly en males. A better understanding of these relationships should be investigated in the context of the Latin American region.
