A Model of Globally Engaged Nursing Education Applied to a Local Immigrant Community
Monday, October 31, 2011: 1:30 PM
To address the need for nursing students to have knowledge necessary for providing nursing in a globalized society, an educational model was developed for use in designing, implementing and evaluating global learning experiences that can be used at the local level and internationally. The model draws from the fields of multicultural learning, global health, study abroad, and transformational learning. As students develop knowledge of and engage in providing care to local immigrant populations, their perspective of themselves as capable of providing intercultural nursing care grows. Our local communities, both immigrant and minority, benefit when the health needs of all residents are addressed in a culturally appropriate way. Nursing students who have developed a global perspective on health care and can transcend cultural and geographic boundaries can contribute to the the health and well-being of all residents in our communities.
