2060.0 Secondary Prevention Research and Practice in Asian and Pacific Islander CommunitiesSunday, October 30, 2011: 4:30 PM
Poster
As national priorities further embrace prevention and wellness, the importance of secondary prevention research in Asian & Pacific Islander (API) communities is growing. The screening and identification of disease in our diverse communities is often a contested, dynamic exchange of social, cultural and health service utilization factors. This poster session highlights research that will showcase secondary prevention research and effective practices in a variety of disease areas that threaten the health of API communities.
Session Objectives: At the end of the session, participants will be able to: (1) Describe two socio-cultural barriers to accessing preventive screenings or vaccinations among APIs; and (2) Identify at least one cultural belief of an API community, framing their understanding disease, utilization of appropriate services, or ability to interpret risk.
