3230.0 Use of registries and surveillance in epidemiology

Monday, October 31, 2011: 12:30 PM
Oral
This interesting session will focus on the use of registries for conducting surviellance in the field of epidemiology. Several examples of registries used for surveillance activities will be described through a series of several talks including gastrointestinal disease outbreak detection using multiple data streams from electronic medical records; determining the feasibility of a National Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Registry; surveillance of ESBL-gene fecal carriage by neonates in an Indian community setting; population-based surveillance for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections among high school football and wrestling participants—Nebraska, 2008–2010; and, data from the National Poison Data System regarding illicit consumption of bath salts.
Session Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the learner (attendee) will be able to describe how registries may be used for conducting surviellance in the field of epidemiology. Specifically, attendees will be able to: 1. Understand methods for gastrointestinal disease outbreak detection using multiple data streams from electronic medical records 2. Determine the feasibility of a National Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Registry 3. Identify surveillance approaches of ESBL-gene fecal carriage by neonates in an Indian community setting 4. Articulate population-based surveillance strategies for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections among high school football and wrestling participants 5. Describe recent data from the National Poison Data System regarding illicit consumption of bath salts.
