This important session is based upon the 2011 APHA meeting theme: Healthy Communities Promote Healthy Minds and Bodies. Specifically, this session will focus on the topic from an epidemiological perspective. Specific talks will include: a District of Columbia Primary Care Needs Assessment (DCPC) to determine the community-based need and demand for primary care; fluoridation in rural-urban settings in the United States; the impact of neighborhood physical and social environments on adolescent physical activity and obesity; an examination of neighborhood factors associated with adult mental health and children's physical activity in New Jersey; and, an exploration of a decision-making tool to identify environmental justice and health disparity communities.
Session Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the learner (attendee) will be able to: 1. Describe a District of Columbia Primary Care Needs Assessment (DCPC) to determine the community-based need and demand for primary care 2. Appreciate issues regarding fluoridation in rural-urban settings in the United States 3. Understand the impact of neighborhood physical and social environments on adolescent physical activity and obesity 4. Describe an examination of neighborhood factors associated with adult mental health and children's physical activity in New Jersey; and 5. Discuss an exploration of a decision-making tool to identify environmental justice and health disparity communities.
