Chronic Non Communicable Diseases_Working on the Margins: A Canadian Primary Care Perspective

The Context of the Canadian health care system will be reviewed including the meaning of Universal Health Care as it relates to primary care. A few challenges posed by CNCDs (morbidity, disability, mortality) in Canada vs the US will be addressed as well as specific prevention strategies encouraged by Public Health. The bulk of the presentation will relate to the Primary Care Setting within with the presenter has dealt with those on the margins refugees, economically marginalized) in the Psychiatric Outreach Project for those at risk of homelessness and as Director of a Refugee Health Clinic for Government Assisted Refugees. For both, use of other professions and systems and a hoistic approach to health, viewing the patient in the context of family and community is critical.
