273151 Veterans and military family health: A ground-level view

Monday, October 29, 2012 : 9:10 AM - 9:30 AM

Pauline Lubens, MPH , UC Irvine, Long Beach, CA
This presentation will be based on the work I did as a photojournalist – before pursuing an MPH -- covering the toll of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on military personnel and their families. The material will combine a public health framework with a ground-level view of the impact of three major differences of the current wars from previous prolonged US conflicts -- multiple deployments, increased deployment of women in combat roles, and the all-volunteer military. Based on that material the presentation will also pose questions about barriers to care as well as the potential long-term health outcomes that we as public health professionals should seek to answer in future research and policy considerations.

Learning Areas:
Advocacy for health and health education
Public health or related public policy

Learning Objectives:
1) Identify needs of military families as well as reservists and national guards that are not addressed by discussions of “veterans” health care. 2) Describe a human face on the topic of health care for veterans

Keywords: Veterans' Health, Mental Health
