Health Initiative of the Americans has maintained the Promotores play an important role in the community health education, promotion and referral efforts. They function as patient advocates and patient navigators trained to connect their community to health care providers and community health Clinics and Centers. This has been goal of the HIA to ensure that Latino Community has right information.

Learning Objectives:
Identify and design access and utilization of medical services among California’s underserved immigrant population through the work and outreach of promotores. Define how promotores with the skills, resources, and confidence to effectively provide linguistically and culturally relevant health education and health advocacy, and serve as a link to resources and health services for underserved communities in California. incorporate well-equipped promotores into the mainstream health care system.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I am a medical anthropologist by training and educated in Guatemala and Mexico. I did a post-doctoral fellowship in reproductive health at the University of California, San Francisco and am currently the Director of Health Initiative of the Americas, School of Public Health, University of California Berkeley, since 2001.
