Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview: The purpose of this Institute is to assist health department staff in developing the skills needed to evaluate, select and prepare documentation suitable for applying, for national public health department accreditation.. As the organization that accredits public health departments, the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) is responsible for ensuring that health department staff are ready to undergo the accreditation process. Solid documentation is the foundation for the assessment of a health department by site visitors. It is also the basis for making a determination for an accreditation decision. Thus it is imperative that health departments have the skills needed to assess their documentation against accreditation requirements. Many of the questions received at PHAB from health departments preparing for accreditation center on their need to develop expertise in evaluating, creating, selecting and revising documentation that could be used to meet the requirements of accreditation standards. The Learning Institute will provide experiential training to develop skills thru both lecture and hands-on exercises. Lecture will provide the guidelines and requirements for documentation. The course will also provide the knowledge needed to understand the intent and interpretation of the Standards and Measures – giving participants sound footing for selecting appropriate documentation. As a part of the lecture and discussion, practical options for organized electronic documentation at the health department will be presented, as this is the only type of documentation that will be accepted for accreditation. The hands-on activity will put this knowledge into practice by providing documentation assessment activities directly related to the lecture material. Group discussion will include opportunities to share perspectives as faculty validates acceptable characteristics of the exercise documentation.
Session Objectives: At the completion of the course, participants will be able to: • Define PHAB requirements for documents used for accreditation measure conformity • Demonstrate how to organize electronic documentation for submission • Demonstrate their ability to select appropriate documentation for measure conformity
