3024.0 Invited Session - Process, Politics and Power in Community Engaged Research PartnershipsMonday, October 29, 2012: 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Oral
This session, Process, Politics and Power in Community Engaged Research Partnerships presents a cluster of case examples of community engaged research partnerships focusing on the issues and challenges communities experience in their efforts to support research as a benefit to traditionally exploited and under-resourced communities in “making the case” for action and sustainable change. Seasoned and novice community partners in research will present their experiences in these partnerships as they have proceeded with caution and engaged in these community based research efforts. Examples come from participants in the National Community Partner Forum held in Boston, MA December 2011 funded by a conference grant from the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities and co-sponsored by Community Campus Partnerships for Health and the Center for Community Health Education Research and Service. The forum was attended by almost 100 individuals from the diverse racial and ethnic communities across the country representing research funded by the NIH CTSA and Partners in Research programs and the CDC Prevention Research Centers as well as other government agencies and private foundations. Projects model participatory engagement with communities in research on social determinants of racial and ethnic health disparities; public health interventions; and clinical and translational research.
Session Objectives: •Identify elements of successful participatory research partnerships
•Describe steps involved in the translation of research into public health interventions
•Discuss benefits of research in informing and influencing public policy and promoting health equity
