Private, Public and Inter-Departmental Partnership Approaches to Health Impact Assessment

Health Impact Assessment can successfully be done by governmental and non-governmental organizations. However, partnerships between the two can provide opportunity to address limitations for both. These partnerships also pose potential challenges. Likewise inter-departmental partnerships in state public health departments provide rich opportunity to maximize expertise and build relationships while posing their own unique challenges. 6 HIAs were completed in 2012 and 2013 in partnership between the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and several community partners including private and municipal level organizations. During the same time period the Bureau's of Environmental Health and Community Health and Prevention began building processes to better collaborate with HIA related activity. The presentation will include brief descriptions of the 6 HIAs with a focus on the partnership aspect of each project and a description of how MDPH's Bureau's of Environmental Health and Community Health and Prevention are furthering the department's HIA activities collaboratively.
