Redefining men's health needs for less recognized subgroups: military/veterans and AI/AN

Tuesday, November 5, 2013: 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Oral
This session will show the need for more service options for those people in the military veterans groups and the American Indian/Alaska Native populations. As our current military veterans are returning back to life in the States they are seeing a lack of healthcare options, for various reasons. Yet are experiencing higher than usual suicide rates. Those military men who are still serving are not receiving health promotion messages as they may need. Among American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN), males experience alarming rates of illness and disease compared to their female counterparts and those often exceed rates for all other U.S. racial and ethnic groups.
Session Objectives: Define the epidemiology of male health across the lifespan. Identify specific men's health issues that are facing American Indian/Alaska Native populations. Describe what is being done in the military populations for healthcare concerns and suicide prevention.
