Outreach and Education Strategies to reach Eligible Uninsured Latino Populations

Monday, November 4, 2013 : 3:10 PM - 3:30 PM

Xochitl Castaneda, MA , Health Initiative of the Americas, Berkeley, CA
The Health Initiative of the Americas (HIA), a program of UC Berkeley School of Public Health, will share its outreach and education strategies to reach and enroll eligible uninsured Latino populations. Effective communication requires appropriate messages, messengers, and methods. Some Latino groups, especially those with immigrant background, are more vulnerable than others due to preexisting health, social and living condition disparities. HIA's outreach strategies take into account the social determinants of health for this population. Such determinants include language barriers, risk perception, cultural values, socio-economics, literacy level, and the lack of understanding of the complex U.S. health system and enrollment procedures. By simplifying enrollment procedures and developing trust, HIA has been able to successfully reach “hardly-reached” Latinos in California.

Learning Areas:
Public health or related public policy

Learning Objectives:
Describe HIA’s strategies to build relationships with community-based organizations (CBOs), local leaders, and other stakeholders to develop trust and community ties. Explain how to create messages and communications that are relevant to the socio-economic realities of the target population.
