Exploring the intersection of public health and healthcare through collaborative practice

Tuesday, November 5, 2013: 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
Oral
The 30+ members of the National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) represent added capacity in the public health system for addressing the most challenging current and emerging population health issues. Public health institutes are known for their entrepreneurial leadership, convening of multi-sector partners from across the public health system, and strong organizational and programmatic capacity. NNPHI members are working in many new areas of programmatic development over the past two years related to the intersection of public health and healthcare such as health insurance exchange development and implementation; exploring safety net provider roles and community health workers in health reform; behavioral health integration; the development of accountable care organizations; and the intersection between population, public health, and health care delivery services. With the release of the Institute of Medicine’s report on Integrating Primary Care and Public Health, there is national attention and discussion on strategies for how public health and healthcare can work together meaningfully to support a shared prevention agenda. This session will feature three public health institutes, Health Resources in Action (MA), the Michigan Public Health Institute and the Mississippi Public Health Institute as they have explored the intersection between public health and healthcare through the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation grants. Each of these public health institutes are collecting lessons learned about the role for public health in the new landscape of accountable care organizations and state health insurance marketplace. This session will provide an overview of the roles of public health institutes in implementing these CMMI grants and highlight three examples of public health institutes’ approaches. The session will also highlight the role of NNPHI in supporting a dialogue about the intersection of public health and healthcare.
Session Objectives: • Describe the added capacity public health institutes bring to the public health system • Summarize public health institutes’ experiences in supporting the intersection of public health and healthcare• Articulate the value public health institutes bring to an expanded vision of the public health system• Discuss next steps for meaningful partnerships between public health and healthcare
