In January 2014, a team of 18 public health professionals from across the US visited Cuba. The trip was promoted by APHA under the sponsorship of MEDICC - a non-profit organization founded in 1997 that works to enhance cooperation between the US and Cuban. Presenters will describe their experiences, observations and analysis of the Cuban health care system — with a special focus on health equity and Cuba’s approach to health in all policies. Specifically the following components of the visit are detailed: the Cuban Health Pyramid – built on the principles that health care is a right, available to all equally and free; integrated and intersectoral; dependent on public participation in the functioning of the system; and committed to global health cooperation.

Based on their observations and interactions with health professionals, patients and students, presenters will provide a comparative analysis of the challenges faced in the U.S. and in Cuba , health equity and community-clinic integration. Visits to the following sites will be included in the presentation: neighborhood polyclinic; a community housing program;  middle school to learn about student participation in HIV-STIs prevention education; socially responsible business development;  medical university; maternity home for women with high risk pregnancies; HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment clinic; and a local social enterprise project.
