In January 2014, a delegation of APHA members travelled to Cuba as part of a MEDICC educational exchange program to gain an insider’s view of Cuba’s approach to ‘health in all policies”. The week long program afforded participants the opportunity to witness firsthand the Cuban Health Pyramid through visits to a neighborhood polyclinic, a provincial medical university, the National School of Public Health, a maternity home for high-risk pregnancies, a HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment clinic, and various community development projects. Based on observations and interactions with health professionals, patients, and students, several best practices from the Cuban healthcare system were identified including community-clinic integration and increased public health training for medical students and physicians. Continued comparative analyses of the successes and challenges of the US and Cuba will strengthen the emerging public health workforce as the US undertakes ongoing healthcare system changes as a result of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
