Background: Exposure to suicide in relationships negatively affects suicidal ideation. Although the effect of suicide in close relationships may be a serious social problem where relationships are highly emphasized and where suicide rate is very high, little is known about detailed information about it. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships with those who committed sucicide in detail, and to investigate the effect of suicide in close relationships on suicide survivors’ suicidal ideation.

Method: Data were collected by telephone survey from 1,000 male and female selected nationwide using stratified sampling method. Chi-square test and binominal logistic regression analysis were used.

Results: The results show that 19% of suicide survivors have had suicide ideation within last 1 year while 7.3% of those who didn’t experience suicide in relationships, and that those who experienced suicide in family, friends, and aquaintance are 4.5 times, 3.7 times, 2.2 times more likely to have suicide ideation within last 1 year.

Conclusion: These findings represent the importance and necessity of suicide prevention policy and services for people exposed to suicide, and suggest that intervention for suicide survivors should be more thoroughly considered for those who experienced suicide in close relationships.
