The issue of working mothers and breastfeeding is framed by the historical context of women's equality in the workplace which continues to be conceptualized in an individual rights/antidiscrimination framework. In the past state and Federal laws tended to identify breastfeeding as a child-rearing activity and, thus, a personal choice. This framework is reinforced by legal decisions handed down by the courts. This poster presentation will include a review of past and current laws and regulations influencing the issue of breastfeeding in the workplace and highlight the implications for working mothers who wish to balance their roles as employees and nursing mothers.
