In this presentation, I will provide an overview of the day and provide Institute participants with background context on digital storytelling methods, to ground the entire Institute in common understandings of what is meant by “digital storytelling.” I will use didactic presentation methods with interspersed short videos (digital stories), to review for participants the theoretical underpinnings of digital storytelling in a public health context (Freirean theory; feminist trauma theory; critical film theory; group process theory), describe the step-by-step mechanics of a digital storytelling workshop; and lay out the potential impacts that digital storytelling can have, at the individual, community, institutional, and policy level.
