This session is designed to orient participants to the processes of qualitative research methodology. Participants will be guided in discussions about the joys and struggles of qualitative data collection and analysis. Participants will begin with outlining their own “intellectual passions” where they will engage in self-reflection of the origins of their values, experiences, preferences, and professional goals that have led them towards of a path of public health practice and/or research. Additionally, we will discuss how theory informs qualitative research and how qualitative research findings work to build theory.

-Differentiate qualitative research from quantitative research.

-Describe the value of engaging in qualitative research methods.

-Describe personal values, life experiences, and professional activities that inform one’s research standpoint.

-Discuss the role of theory in qualitative research.
