The Affordable Care Act created ACOs to provide a more efficient and effective system. Both public and private organizations have been aggressively pursuing Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) as a way lowering health care costs, improving health care outcomes, and improving patient satisfaction. Since their inception in 2010 Accountable care organizations have experienced significant growth and are likely to play a large role on health insurance exchanges, the Medicare program and the provision of care outside the exchanges. Many contend that ACOs could revolutionize the way care is delivered We will discuss market penetration and the different types of ACOs. Although ACOs are focused on chronic diseases, this paper will report its survey findings on the extent to which eye care services are offered and delivered within ACO and strategies that may be used to provide eye care within an ACO framework. Participation by optometrists and ophthalmologists within ACOs will be discussed.
