Kathleen Grassi, R.D., M.P.H. , Merced County Department of Public Health, Merced, CA
CA4Health, the Public Health Institute's Community Transformation Grant, works with the counties in California whose population is less than 500,000 to implement local changes that will create healthier community environments. Merced County is a recipient of CA4Health with a focus in four strategic areas: smoke-free multi-unit housing, reducing access to sugary beverages, safe routes to school and community-clinical linkages. In order to create sustainable environmental changes in these areas, collaboration across sectors is necessary. The presentation will discuss the Merced County Department of Public Health’s (Department) involvement with local partners and decision-makers to make a HiAP training available to staff and community partners including non-profits, faith based community, law enforcement and community advocates. The presentation will discuss the reaction, and outcomes of the HiAP training and future plans to build upon the initial training. The presenter will provide examples of how a Health in All Policies approach has been used to engage stakeholders through presentations, meetings with elected officials and community forums. Finally, the presenter will discuss the Department’s recent involvement in policy development through collaboration with county and city planning and other government agencies.
