This presentation explores the scope and content of three interconnected areas of the contemporary field of public health law: public health law jurisprudence, research, and practice.  While there are normative outer limits on the research and practice of public health, there is interrelation across these three areas. Public health law jurisprudence describes those areas of inquiry that seek to outline the normative justification and limits of state action that frame public health. Public health law practice is law applied, focusing on the activities of lawyers working in public health or impacting upon the public’s health. Complementing these traditional components, public health law research seeks to understand how the law impacts public health, viewing law as a determinant of health and instrumental to realizing health goals. Through this conceptual review and contemporary recategorization, a new model of public health law is developed, articulating the interactions between jurisprudence, practice, and research and the influence of this interaction on the discipline.
