Efforts to professionalize the Community Health Worker (CHW) role have led to the establishment of numerous CHW education and certification programs across the country. While these programs can help raise the visibility and legitimacy of the CHW as a professional role, they can pose challenges for experienced CHWs, who may not be in a position, financially or from a timing perspective, to enroll into these programs.  Experienced CHWs may also have substantial skills in some of the areas these programs address, which would make specific courses counter-productive for these CHWs to enroll into.  Prior Learning Assessments (PLAs) hold promise for helping programs identify the skills experienced CHWs have, and provide them with course credit toward these programs. In this interactive session, I plan to describe what PLAs are and how they have worked in educational programs for CHWs and other professions.  I will then ask participants to identify any PLAs that have been developed for CHW programs they are familiar with, and suggest ways in which we might share these PLAs across programs with a goal of helping experienced CHWs participate in advancing their education in more efficient ways.
