Since 2008, the Afghan Peace Volunteers, a grassroots effort comprised of multiethnic Afghans, have been experimenting with the use of nonviolence to end the war in Afghanistan and transform their society. Employing the nonviolent methods and tactics of Mohammed Gandhi, Abdul Ghaffar Khan, Martin Luther King Jr. and developing new approaches to peacemaking specific to the Afghan context, the Afghan Peace Volunteers are demonstrating a model for promoting change, deescalating violence, and resisting war. This presentation describes the findings from several visits to Afghanistan, interview the Afghan Peace Volunteers, interviews with their international supporters, and reviewing the documents and videos that they have produced to understand how Afghans are seeking nonviolent solutions to resolve the conflict in their country.
