The Virginia Anti-Violence Project (VAVP) serves LGBTQ Virginians experiencing partner, household, sexual, and hate violence.  VAVP completed a landmark statewide assessment of violence among LGBTQ Virginians (with nearly 1000 respondents to a community survey); achieved 501.c.3 incorporation (in 2008); and has a record of work supported through substantial awards, including from the Office of Violence Against Women to implement an array of innovative services in one metropolitan area using a social ecological model.  VAVP has sustained collaborations with public health agencies and criminal justice agencies and has been a locus for cross-training on public health and ciminal justice issues.  This is remarkable effort and progress in a state that Lambda Legal rated at the very bottom of its 2011 Safety Scale (regarding legislative respect for same-sex relationships). The presentation will provide a (a) brief organizational timeline; (b) describe key data and findings from the statewide LGBTQ community assessment; (c) review projects and programs, including highlighting accomplishments, challenges, barriers, and lessons learned. The presentation intends ample time for discussion.
