Immunization Video Contest: A tool to engage New Jersey adolescents and their peers in health promotion
Methodology: A statewide 30-second immunization video contest was held online from September - December 2013. The contest challenged NJ pre-teens (11-14) and teens (15-18) to create 30-second videos detailing symptoms and prevention of pertussis, meningococcal disease or human papilloma virus (HPV). Students submitted videos adhering to contest rules. Video were screened internally and opened for public voting. Based on votes, a grand prize winner and runner-up in each category was awarded. Also, the teacher with the most student video submissions received a prize.
Results: 36 video submissions were received. Ten finalist videos had 10,566 web page views and 2,795 votes were cast. PMW3 Facebook likes went from 34 to 400 afterwards. Contest generated over 90 media placements on NJ online news outlets.
Conclusions: Participants used social media to promote their videos and raise awareness among peers. HPV emerged to be a topic of primary interest among adolescents based on higher number of HPV video submissions. Since our website generated high traffic this year we plan to transform it into an education and awareness focused resource in 2014.
