Background

To meet the objectives of the Federal Digital Strategy (May 2012) and the increasing demands for health information across digital channels, a team of public health technology, and content experts have developed technology and processes to syndicate content from HHS organizations to help public health professionals at federal, state and local levels expand their reach, engage more with their target audiences, and save time and money.

Objectives/purpose

The HHS Content Syndication team is developing technology to expand the reach of health information by creating a way for others to access federal digital resources, including: website and social media content, images, video, data, and infographics.

Methods

To develop user interfaces for content syndication, usability tests were conducted with public health partners to understand how they search for and share digital health content. On an annual basis the team promotes content syndication to build partnerships and the amount of digital content available through syndication sites. Additionally, web analytics are collected frequently to track what types of content is receiving the most amount of page views.

Results

HHS Content Syndication currently has more than 10,000 content pages available for syndication. The content that flows through the syndication engine is getting more than 170,000 page views per month and over 2 million per year. There are already more than 1,200 registered partners. Syndicated content from HHS organizations has reached all 50 states and over 27 countries worldwide.
