Marilyn Gardner, RN , Women's Health Network, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Boston, MA
In 2011, the Women’s Health Network (WHN) of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health developed a hybrid course as a cost- and time-efficient sustainable replacement for their 48-hour in-person course that was required of all of the CHWs working in the patient navigator role in their programs. The hybrid course, consisting of 10 online modules containing core and health-specific competency areas and two in-person training days was developed with and co-instructed by CHWs just as the in-person course had been. In anticipation of CHW certification in Massachusetts and in order to make quality improvements, WHN hired an objective third-party non-profit to evaluate the course. The evaluation process included focus groups of CHW course participants and interviews with CHWs, their supervisors and CHW key leaders. Over 50 individuals were engaged in this process including individuals from three states outside of Massachusetts where the course had been adopted. Additionally, pre- and post-test data assessing knowledge and self-efficacy from four hybrid classes were analyzed. Overall, assessment participants were highly satisfied with the course. The course was found to be rigorous, the hybrid format was lauded as an appropriate and necessary means to training the busy CHW workforce. Statistically significant knowledge and self-efficacy increases were found for each group of participants who completed the course. The presentation will discuss the hybrid course content, format, key findings from the evaluation regarding the value of the course and areas for improvement, and next steps in preparations to offer certification compliant education.
