INTRODUCTION

Latinos are disproportionately affected by diabetes and other obesity-related health problems. Moreover, urban segregation has increased, concentrating these health issues in high-minority areas where the most convenient, low-cost food options are fast food. Loncheras (traditional Latino food trucks) are an important exception in the fast-food landscape, serving affordable, unprocessed foods to their local communities. Unfortunately, most loncheras serve portions that are too large, without whole grains, and with few fruits/vegetables.

APPROACH

We aimed to leverage the potential for loncheras to positively impact their communities through a pilot program with 20 Los Angeles-area loncheras. Participants worked with a bilingual dietician to add a minimum of one healthy meal to their menus, which were promoted through new signage, coupons, and a publicity campaign.

RESULTS

In spite of the large number of potential participants (>2,000), recruitment was challenging. Multiple recruitment strategies included:1) outreach through the loncheras association, 2) direct recruitment at food commissaries, and 3) phone recruitment. Addressing concerns about the time and cost required to participate was critical for garnering buy-in. Loncheras located in more integrated areas were more open to participating than those in heavily low-income, majority Latino/a and African American neighborhoods. Creating meals to comply with the My Plate guidelines was primarily achieved through replacing beans and rice with vegetable and fruit options.  These meals were calculated to be comparable in cost to other meals that were served at the trucks.

DISCUSSION

The program has increased nutrition knowledge and healthy options in areas where few healthy, economical choices existed.

Learning Areas:

Diversity and culture
Implementation of health education strategies, interventions and programs
Planning of health education strategies, interventions, and programs
Program planning

Learning Objectives:
Identify the lessons learned from the implementation of a program to help 20 Los Angeles area Latino food trucks (Loncheras) to serve healthy meals. Examine how popular food truck meals can be successfully adapted to meet My Plate meal guidelines, appeal to Latino/a communities, and be profitable for small business owners. Outline the factors that enable and hinder successful collaborations with loncheras owners.
