Monitoring and Evaluation of Vida Vibrante: A Community Health Worker-led Diabetes Self-Management Project

Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes is a growing global health concern that affects 14% of Hispanic adults in Riverside County. As a result El Sol Neighborhood Educational Center (El Sol) created Vida Vibrante: a community health worker (promotor) led diabetes prevention and self-management program. Masters of Public Health (MPH) Global Health students partnered with El Sol to complete a process evaluation. The collaborative evaluation incorporated perspectives of the promotoras and the stakeholder, El Sol, to better assess the incorporation of Popular Education techniques into the curriculum.

Methods: Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) tools were developed and used to assess the quality of the program. Observation tools analyzed the fidelity of incorporation of popular education into the curriculum during the promotoras’ training and the eight-session intervention. The stakeholder and promotoras participated in key informant interviews in order to better understand their expectations of the Vida Vibrante program evaluation and to assess their satisfaction with the program.

Projected Results: Results of these evaluations recommended areas for future improvement of the implementation of the program and verified the adaptability of the Vida Vibrante curriculum and evaluation tools to other promotor-led programs.

Conclusion: The use of M&E tools allowed for the continuous improvement of the Vida Vibrante Diabetes Self-Management Project. The results were used for the development of a Community Health Worker curriculum that is effective and incorporates Popular Education as a means of empowering a community.
