Men who have sex with men (MSM) in China remain a stigmatized and hidden population; therefore convenience sampling is typically used to study the MSM population, even though the generalizability to the larger MSM population is compromised. Therefore, three recruitment methods were used in this study; respondent-driven sampling (RDS), community partner opinion leader (CPOL), and venue-based sampling (VBS). The aim of this study was to compare the sample demographics, the rates of psychosocial variables and drug use. The sample consisted of 1,352 MSM in Shanghai and each completed a cross-sectional behavioral survey. Comparisons were made between recruitment methods for all study variables. The following demographics were significantly different between the three recruitment methods; participant’s age, age at first sexual contact with men and women, ethnicity, education level, income, sexual orientation, and marital status (p<.05). The 12-item CES-D summary score was also significantly different between all three recruitment methods (F=5.1, p=.006). The lifetime prevalence of male-on-male intimate partner violence was 51% for RDS, 38.6% for CPOL, and 49.5% VBS (X2=29.95, p=.008). Stimulant use was highest among VBS, with 32.1% of the participants having used stimulants over the course of their life, and significantly higher than both RDS (6.9%) and CPOL (13.9%) recruitment methods (p=.000). The significant differences between demographic characteristics, psychosocial variables, and drug use indicate that these recruitment methods result in different behavioral profiles. These findings support the utilization of multiple recruitment methods in order to improve the representativeness of the MSM population in Shanghai, China.
