The recruitment of ethnic minorities, particularly Latinos, into clinical trials (CT) and biospecimen (BB) studies is a formidable challenge. Latinos equal 17% of the US population and Cancer is their leading cause of death. Increasing their inclusion in biomedical research contributes to advancing public health and medical research and practice. Videos have been used widely in health education with Latinos; yet videos promoting Latino CT and BB participation. Most materials and videos have focused solely on CT participation and are translated from their English counterpart but do not address BB. Therefore, we created a culturally and linguistically tailored 3-minute video to promote Latino participation in CT and BB studies. The specific aims are to: 1) educate on the importance of CT and BB studies; and 2) promote acceptability and willingness to participate in CT and BB studies. The literature, community assessments, and focus groups data informed the development of the video. The video was finalized using consensus process, and evaluated by City of Hope’s community partners. Preliminary evaluation was conducted with Latino advocates, survivors and/or family members (n=151).  Participants viewed the video then completed a short evaluation on BB and CT attitudes. After viewing the video, 72% and 68% of respondents were more confident in their ability to share information about research with family and community, respectively; and 67% were more willing to participate in a research study after viewing the video. Future plans include continued dissemination of video and assessment of CT and BB participation.

Learning Areas:

Presenting author's disclosure statement:

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I have over 7 years of experience with cancer research and health education with underserved communities, particularly the Latino community. More specifically, my work with underserved populations includes several projects focusing on promoting participation in clinical trials and biospecimen studies, as well as breast and cervical cancer prevention and survivorship. My work focuses on health education and promotion as a CHES. Specifically, I have worked on developing education materials that are culturally and linguistically tailored.
