Cancer is a significant burden in many rural states. The Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan [CCCP] of a rural state aims to combat cancer and related disease through collaboration. This study evaluated the CCCP of a rural state through the use of focus groups. Community members provided input on the current plan.

All materials and procedures were IRB approved. Focus groups were held in ten communities.  Five groups were conducted in urban settings, one group was in a small rural community, and five groups were in large rural communities. Participants were provided brief summaries of the CCCP. A structured focus group format asked the same four questions about cancer control and prevention at each focus group.  Detailed notes enabled content review and major themes and subthemes were identified.

Fifty-seven adults attended the focus groups. Identified areas of concern were: complicated insurance, fear of the unknown, difficulty obtaining care, availability of screening and access, financial and psychological support, use of evidence based practice, and lack of knowledge. Identified strengths included: expanded healthcare coverage, hospice care, screening practices and programs, financial and patient support, treatment close to home, quality of care, and fundraising.

Participants' suggestions for change emphasized the need for improved education, patient emotional and financial support, and focus on prevention. Six main recommendations were: 1. Improved access, 2. Expanded cancer support services, 3. Increase use of evidence based care, 4. Education to third party payers on cancer screening guidelines, 5. Stress the importance of prevention, and 6. Improve access to palliative and end of life care. The results of this study can be used to strengthen the CCCP.
