Background: Female led migration is a recent trend that has been gaining momentum in Latin America. However, little attention has been given to the psychological consequences of Latina mothers who leave their children in the home country and migrate to the United States to work. Therefore, it is important to investigate the mental health status of transnational Latina mothers residing in the United States and to farther identify issues for interventions and supportive services.

Methods: ProQuest, PsycInfo, and EBSCO databases were searched systematically for English-language qualitative articles and dissertations published between 1990 and 2013. The search included terms such as “depression”, “Latina”, “mothers”, “transnational mothers” and/or “migration. Initially, 73 studies were identified. After exclusionary criteria were applied 8 studies were identified and included.

Results: After conducting the search one quantitative study was found addressing the symptoms of depression that are present among transnational mothers. A total of 7 qualitative studies were found addressing other issues besides mental health the issue of depression become evident throughout the experiences described by the Latina mothers themselves.

Implications: In order to be able to treat Latina transnational mothers for depression, it is essential to identify these women and assess their needs. Therefore, public health social workers and other clinicians first need to focus on developing strategies to reach this population and assess their mental health needs. Also, researchers need to focus on developing innovative strategies to identify, recruit, and test interventions that address the unique issues that transnational mothers face.
