As changes occur in the technology and animal handling procedures in the dairy industry, injury patterns are apt to change.  We report on an active surveillance process using a recurring survey of dairies in Wisconsin to identify changing injury and illness patterns in farmers and farmworkers in a dairy industry undergoing rapid change. This information will inform policy and intervention attempts. Our aim is to reduce the overall burden of injury and illness on this population. Population-based estimates of injury and illnesses incidence in dairy farm operators were attained using our extensive electronic health record. We then developed a survey instrument that was mailed to diaries to establish estimates of injury and illness among dairy farms. This survey also allowed us to identify high risk activities and conditions associated with production processes and worker characteristics. Moving ahead in the future we will be able to track major influences on the frequency of injury or illness in the dairy workforce, and its relationship to changes on the dairy.
