Darius D. Sivin, PhD , Health and Safety, International Union, UAW, Washington, DC
Background and Objectives:

A UAW Local identified a large number of cancer cases among its active and retired membership.  About 50% of these were cancer cases.  The local sought the assistance of the International Union, in identifying causese and preventing further cancers.

Medthods, Results and Conclusion:  The Internatioinal Union assisted the Local in negotiating contract language calling for removal of carcinogens from the facility or engineering controls to eliminate exposure.  The local health and safety committee will be trained to implement this language.  In addition there will be ongoing monitoring of new information regarding new chemicals coming into the facility to prevent the introduction of new carcinogens.  The local will also be trained and responsible for these activities.  The union and company will also be doing preliminary work to prepare for a possible epidemiologic study.  Progress on all these activities will be reported.
