Kim Nolte, MPH, MCHES , Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential (GCAPP), Atlanta, GA
The continued decline of teen birth rates in the U.S. is a clear signal that effective measures are underway to empower teens with comprehensive sexual health information and access to teen friendly clinical services. In 2012, teen birth rates in GA (33.8 per 1,000 for 15-19y.o.) have reached historic lows, ranking 17thhighest in the nation with a 12% drop from 2011-2012, illustrating a decline twice as fast as the U.S. average and the highest decline our state has ever seen.

With funding from the Office of Adolescent Health (OAH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), for a Teen Pregnancy Prevention initiative targeting 15-19 y.o. Richmond County (RC) youth in Augusta, GA, the GA Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential (GCAPP) embraced a cutting edge approach to empower young people and the RC community with a free cellular App to bridge the gap between sexual health information and access to care.

gPower: Power in the Palm of Your Hand,” is an innovative way for young people to: learn about birth control options; find sexual health services in GA; set clinic appointments and birth control reminders; rate clinic experience; and share fun videos developed by teens for teens.
