From access to medicines to tobacco control, the new generation of trade agreement negotiations, specifically the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP), may have profound implications for many aspects of the global public health landscape. As the U.S. has announced intentions to use these “partnerships” as a model for all future free trade agreements, it is essential that the public health community actively engage in shaping the TPP and TTIP. Stakeholder events have been organized at most rounds of negotiations; nonetheless, TPP negotiations have been criticized as inaccessible to many stakeholders, lacking transparency and offering few meaningful opportunities for civil society stakeholder participation. A particular concern has been preferential industry access to negotiations, negotiators and draft texts. In this context, this presentation will analyze recent stakeholder activities and participation in TPP negotiations and discuss potential strategies to strengthen the public health voice in future rounds of trade agreement negotiations.
