Ineffective communication is considered as one of the major factors accounting for the increasing tense relationship between physicians and patients in China. A communication model is a general description of the physician-patient communication process which has many beneficial implications for physicians to interact with their patients successfully. Several models have been proposed for physician-patient communication, including SEGUE framework, Macy Model and E4 Model. Given the rapid popularity of social media in health care sector, a lot of researches come out and believe it will transform the pattern of physician-patient communication. However, there exist few new models to accounting for the social media’s impact on physician-patient communication. This study aims to reengineer the overall physician-patient communication process by considering adoption of social media in this process. We assume that the application of social media by physicians and patient for their communication will enrich the channel of communication, extend the scope of communication as well as modify the objectives of communication. Based on these assumptions, a “Six Stage” communication model is presented for physician-patient interaction which divides the whole communication process into six phases, including preparation, engagement, interaction, education, agreement and retaining. Compared to traditional communication model, the Six Stage Model emphasizes the communication prior and after the face-to-face interaction between physicians and patients, which can fully involve the patients and their family in the health care process.
