Colin Adamo , Health & Social Equity, Advocates for Youth, Washington, DC
The focus of this presentation will be to encourage participants to reimagine how health educators and public health programs can engage young men in sexual and reproductive health promotion. It will begin with a brief overview of how conventional efforts conceptualize adolescent and young male’s sexuality and convey sexual messages. It will then analyze how these traditional efforts succeed and fall short. From there I will provide examples of innovative programs, including the work of Advocates for Youth and our partners, which seek to help young men adopt healthy behaviors by taking interpersonal interactions and health readiness from the abstract and providing clear coaching around informed decision making and health practices. Finally, this presentation will conclude with a walkthrough of the Men On A Mission Challenge Campaign activities and materials that provide young men with information, activities, and activist opportunities to develop young men that make responsible and respectful decisions regarding the sexual health of themselves and their partners.
