Background: Dual use of conventional cigarettes and electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is recently emerging among adolescents in South Korea despite its hazardous implications on public health. The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence of dual use among conventional adolescent smokers in South Korea, and to draw a profile of those dual smokers with respect to smoking factors and delinquency factors.

Methods:Data is based on Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2011~2013) containing 24,444 smokers among Korean middle and high school students.

Results: Dual use was 25.8% among current smokers. After adjusting socio-demographic factors, adolescents who initiated smoking earlier (time of initiation, middle school: OR 1.27, 95% CI: 1.09-1.48; before middle school: OR 1.68, 95% CI: 1.43-1.97), who smoked larger amount of cigarettes (amount of smoking, 2~5/day: OR 1.84, 95% CI: 1.62-2.08; 6~19/day: OR 3.01, 95% CI: 2.62-3.44, more than 20/day: OR 3.92, 95% CI: 3.28-4.7), who attempted to quit smoking (OR 1.31, 95% CI: 1.21-1.42), and who were exposed to passive smoking more often (OR 0.93, 95% CI 0.91-0.95) were more likely to become dual users.

As for delinquency factors, adolescents who had experience of drinking alcohol (OR 1.37, 95% CI: 1.17-1.6), using drugs (OR 2.09, 95% CI: 1.78-2.44), and having sexual intercourse (OR 1.47, 95% CI: 1.35-1.61) had more odds of dual use.

Conclusions: The profile outcome data from this research is expected to contribute to future dual use of conventional cigarettes and e-cigarettes safety policies.

Learning Areas:

Public health or related research

Learning Objectives:
Explain what ‘Dual Use’ is. List two factors that were used to draw a profile of dual smokers in South Korea adolescents. List four variables that account for ‘Smoking Factors’ and three variables that account for ‘Delinquency Factors’. Describe the hazardous implications of dual use.
