Defining collaborative goal setting: Using patient perceptions in a population with diabetes
Methods: Four focus groups were moderated among 19 patients with diabetes. Groups were stratified by Hemoglobin (Hb) A1c control. Each group was moderated using a semi-structured focus group guide designed to elicit patient perceptions of what a collaborative goal means to them and what has to happen for a goal to be considered collaborative. Audio-recordings from each focus group were transcribed and coded for thematic content.
Results: Patients defined collaborative goal setting as a process occurring over two phases: (1) a goal discussion’ and (2) support for goal achievement. Within the first phase, patients identified four components: listen and learn from each other; share ideas honestly; take time to care; and agree on a measurable objective. Patients articulated patient and provider responsibilities within each phase, and individual components within phases.
Conclusion: Patients defined that collaborative goal setting as a process that occurred over time rather than an act that happened within a single visit. Furthermore, collaborative goal setting was described as not only including a goal discussion, but support for goal achievement as well.
