BACKGROUND/ SIGNIFICANCE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) among Latino immigrants is common, equaling that of non-immigrant women at 19.5% lifetime prevalence, but is often hidden. Similarly, IPV among all rural-dwellers and rural Latino immigrants in particular is not well documented or understood. The Latino population in the United States is growing, and the rural Latino population, 40% of whom are immigrants, grew by 45% from 2000 to 2010 compared to 4.5% overall. With this increasing population immigrant Latino victims face significant barriers to seeking help with abuse such as language, economic position, and immigrant/ legal status concerns.   Recent immigrants are at particularly high risk for IPV due to lack of knowledge of available services and little social support.  Rural victims face significant barriers as well, such as fear of lack of confidentiality, possible social isolation, and decreased services and access. An examination of the intersection of IPV among rural Latino immigrants and effective interventions has not been studied extensively.

METHODS: A systematic literature review using Cooper’s integrative review methodology.  Two areas of focus for the literature review are 1) examination of the literature regarding the scope of the problem and 2) the quality of the evidence for IPV interventions in rural Latinos.

CONCLUSIONS: The scope of the problem of IPV among Latino immigrants in rural settings is elaborated. Concepts associated with rural immigrant Latino victims are identified and common concerns reviewed and discussed.  Evidence for culturally effective and appropriate interventions is proposed.

Learning Areas:

Diversity and culture
Public health or related nursing

Learning Objectives:
Define the scope of the problem of intimate partner violence (IPV) in rural immigrant Latinos, in terms of prevalence. Discuss three reasons rural immigrant Latinos face significant barriers as IPV victims. Analyze the quality of evidence of IPV interventions for the rural immigrant Latino population, using levels of evidence.

Presenting author's disclosure statement:

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: While a PhD student, I received NRSA funding (NIH) for a study on IPV in older women. One of the components was rural older women. Since that time, I co-conducted a study called “Nursing Cultural Competency: Caring for Hispanic Patients and Families.” This systematic literature review represents the first phase of a new project, of relevance to my rural community.
