DNA Modeling and Protein Synthesis

142nd APHA Annual Meeting and Exposition (November 15 - November 19, 2014): http://www.apha.org/events-and-meetings/annual
Saturday, November 15, 2014 : 10:45 AM - 11:45 AM

Kathleen Vandiver, M.A. in Vascular Physiology, M.A. in Teaching, Ph.D. in Cell Biology and Anatomy , Center for Environmental Health Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA
Participants in teams of two will be constructing DNA from model nucleotides and creating a linear sequence of genes to demonstrate a chromosome. The coded messages in the DNA strands will be utilized as instructions for building several protein subunits. Both transcription and translation can be performed utilizing the mRNA and tRNA models, demonstrating how mutations in the coding can alter the structure of a protein.  Because the molecular details of proteins were taught earlier, participants can more easily focus on these synthetic processes.

Learning Areas:

Basic medical science applied in public health
Environmental health sciences
Implementation of health education strategies, interventions and programs
Public health biology
Public health or related education
Public health or related nursing

Learning Objectives:
Demonstrate the cell processes of replication, transcription and translation for a DNA sequence using molecular models of amino acids, tRNA, and DNA and RNA nucleotides and explain how a change in the DNA can change the functionality of the protein it codes for.
