INTRODUCTION

Aligarh being a city with a population of 1.2million in Uttar Pradesh, India, has a huge burden of slums (0.7 million).  Aligarh has high unmet need & the Couple Protection Rate is low reflected by the fact that the need for limiting and spacing is 20.10 % and CPR 15.95 %( 2010). In this background the Urban Health Initiative (UHI) in association with Government & NGOs planned for strengthening family planning services  in  188 urban slums.

OBJECTIVES

Identify areas with low CPR and help couples to choose and accept family planning methods based on their demand  and to demonstrate quality services in Government and large volume  private health facilities.

METHODOLOGY

The initiative was to strengthen the demand generation at community level for range of community level activities. Women members from slum community were selected as Peer Educators (PEs), for Family based counselling on basket of choice on family planning.

RESULTS

A population of 0 .7 million with 123,147 household and 55,625 Married Women of Reproductive age group received Family Planning counselling and services by community workers (PEs). The data trend shows upto 17.74 point percentage increase in CPR from December 2010 to December 2013.

CONCLUSION

Community mobilization with informed choices can change the mindset and increase receptiveness of the people. This strategy helped the team to reach out the unreached communities with Family Planning services, which were cost effective.
