Strengthening health communication with college students: The role of website content on sexual assault
Methods: This study uses a mixed method approach. Through content analysis of 22 university websites, the existing sexual assault related content are examined. Additionally, 15 service providers providing services to sexual assault survivors are interviewed to understand the need of services and information sought by students. Additionally, service providers' recommendation on how websites can cater to survivors' needs are recorded.
Results: The study identifies that website content ignores the health aspect of sexual violence amidst an overwhelming array of legal information. University websites need to list why and how sexual assault survivors can receive services and support for their overall wellbeing. Although service providers in university setting acknowledge the need of health communication through internet, inadequate resource allocation remain a challenge to meet the needs.
Conclusion: As addressing sexual assault on campus becomes a priority in government legislation and public health interventions, the results of this study can provide useful insights about the support that sexual assault survivors need to receive through online platforms. Website information catering the needs of the sexual assault survivors can greatly help to facilitate how students can get needed information and motivation to seek services for their well-being.
