School Health Connection (SHC), a program of the Louisiana Public Health Institute, has been implementing comprehensive wellness programs in New Orleans public schools since 2009. The School Wellness Program pilot demonstrated that in order to be most effective, all school health and wellness programs within a school should be coordinated. SHC has utilized the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Coordinated School Health model as a framework for developing and implementing comprehensive school wellness programming in 20 New Orleans schools. A number of states have recently established coordinated school health mandates based on links to improved health and academic success. This session will clearly outline the steps to developing and implementing a Coordinated School Health program, including the formation of a school health advisory committee; completion of the School Health Index or another school health assessment; and the development and implementation of a school health improvement plan. This session will also identify potential challenges that may arise when establishing a comprehensive school wellness program and strategies developed by SHC to promote program success and sustainability. With nearly 5 years of programming reflections, this session will discuss lessons learned from implementing Coordinated School Health programs in New Orleans schools, as well as recommended strategies for designing similar programs.
